Symptoms and treatments of lung cancer

Lung cancer is the number one cause of death in cancer for both men and women as the research or the surveys say. And most of the studies blame cigarette smoking for that. It is said to be the principal cause of lung cancer and infection. The active and passive exposure to tobacco does cause lung cancer.

There are 2 types of lung cancer which grow and spread differently. They are small cell lung cancers and non small cell lung cancers. The stages of lung cancer refer to the extent to which the cancer has spread in a body. If one is thinking about lung cancer treatment cost in India the one should know that there is a combination of treatment here that involves chemotherapy, surgery, targeted therapy, radiation and immunotherapy. The general prognosis of lung cancer is very poor because the doctors mostly do not find any disease until it reaches its advanced stage.

Cancer of the lung just like all other cancers results from the abnormality of the body’s basic unit of life which is the cell. The body maintains a system of checks and balances on cell growth so that cells divide to produce new cells only when new cells are needed. Disruption of this system of checks and balances on cell growth results in an uncontrolled division and proliferation of cells that eventually forms a mass which is also called a tumour.

The tumours can be malignant or benign and if the tumour is malignant, then the disease is in a serious stage. The benign tumours can usually be removed and so it cannot spread to the other parts of the body. The malignant tumours on the other hand grow very aggressively. They do start in the local area but the tumour cells can also enter the blood stream or the lymphatic system and then spread to the other areas of the body. This process of spreading is also known as the metastasis. Lung cancer is actually a very life threatening cancer and is one of the most difficult cancers to treat. Though lung cancer can spread to any organ of the body it mostly spreads to certain locations like liver, adrenal glands, brain and bones. They are the most common sites of lung cancer metastases.

There are a few symptoms associated with the lung cancer. They are as follows.

  • One can suffer from a new persistent cough or worsening of an existing chronic cough.
  • There can be blood in the sputum.
  • One can suffer from persistent bronchitis or repeated respiratory infections.
  • There can be regular chest pain.
  • Someone might face unexplained weight loss and fatigue or tiredness.
  • There can be breathing difficulties such as shortness of breath or wheezing.

Mostly oncologists treat lung cancer. The surgical oncologists are specialised on removal of the tumours. The thoracic surgeons may also help if it has spread to the glands. Then there are medications and radiotherapy which are very much needed to treat this disease.
